Managing Financial Change During Health or Disability Issues

Your New Financial Reality: A Planning Handbook

When people experience a sudden or gradual change in their health or physical condition, it can have major impact on their financial situations.  Income may decline, or it may stabilize.  Expenses may increase in new areas, while some costs may decrease.

This guide is for people who are experiencing a change in their financial circumstances due to a change in their health or physical condition, or who are caring for someone who is coping with these changes. The booklet is designed to:

  • explore your personal strengths and community networks to look at ways of making them stronger
  • provide tools for determining your new income and expenses, and for planning for the future
  • provide some ideas about where you might find financial supports that you are not aware of
  • provide some ideas about making the transition from the way things used to be for you to the way they will be in the future.

This guide is also for people whose health condition or disability has persisted for a long time, or where the health problem or disability fluctuates in its impact on a person’s day to day life.

The handbook is a collaboration between two longstanding Winnipeg non-profit organizations – Community Financial Counselling Services and Manitoba League of Persons with Disabilities.
